Happy first birthday to Sounds on Sunday. I can’t honestly say that it has swayed the nation towards a new enthusiasm for exploring more eclectic music, but I hope it has been useful in giving a few new artists some exposure. I’ve certainly enjoyed listening to (most) of the music and I’d like to say “thank you” to all those promoters and artists who have been eager to share their work. Here’s this week’s selection for your enjoyment.

Toledo – On My Own: “When Jordan Dunn-Pilz and Daniel Alvarez de Toledo were just small lads, they started playing guitar in the nearby town to attract listeners. Now, the two seasoned musicians are gigging and giggling their way to success with their new band TOLEDO. With a blend of traditional and modern sounds, TOLEDO is an indie-pop, sailor-shanty, pirate-rock band from Boston, MA. Collaborating with visual artists and animators, the band is a multifaceted machine.” Video here.

Emme – Wander: “Austin-based duo Emme‘s Wander … is a meditation on memory, asking what fills the cognitive void that comes from a lost relationship, while pondering the phenomenon of re-connection. Formed in 2016 after years of friendship and late night music nerd-out sessions, Emme is the indie-electro project of Sowmya Somanath and Walter Nichols. Having come up in both eastern and western classical music traditions, Somanath and Nichols balance their musical knowledge with their artistic intuition, resulting in a unique take on a pop duo.”

Lower Pink – Young: “Here is the new song Young (rel. October 6th) from one of Switzerland’s finest, Lower Pink. The Swiss music press delivers one rave review after another about the independent troubadour… Young is a listening experience and the video paints a euphoric feeling through impressive pictures and an unagitated storyline – leaving behind an echo. The video has been shot in the Swiss alps transmits in images, what the music lets us feel: Distance and vicinity – for once unisono.”

Grok Enrol & the Nu-Thing – Gullible Kingdom: Gullible Kingdom is a remixed edit from “AllMix/Dup“, the debut album from Grok Enrol & The Nu-Thing, the Sheffield / Leeds (UK) based band that blend dub, metal, psyche, post-punk and electronica. The line up consists of Grok Enrol (vocals / guitar / keyboards) and Phill Geldoff (bass / theremin), who have been working together since 2016. Guest musicians on the album include Jarrod Gosling (Cobalt Chapel / I Monster) on Mellotron and percussion.

Daniel Verstappen – Soulmate:Daniel Verstappen is releasing his latest single Soulmate on 27 October 2017. It is very much a track that shows the true potential of blending electronic and classical sounds to connect audiences. Daniel is a native of Belgium and is an international pianist, composer and performer. Daniel has toured throughout Europe alongside world class artists and composers such as The Night Of The Proms, Brussels Philharmonics, Hooverphonic, Bocelli, Ennio Morricone and a number of others.”

KLEZ – Sons and Daughters: “Sound x 3 Records is pleased to announce the worldwide digital release of Old Soul New World by California neo soul and indie pop writer and recording artist, John Klezmer aka “Klez” in fall 2017… (This is the) second EP of Klez, whose music lies somewhere in the nebulous middle of the soul spectrum. Take the purity and resonance of Hozier and pair it with the soulful grit of Son Little, and you get Klez … The EP was recorded in the Bay Area; mixed in Northern California and mastered by audio guru, Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Artic Monkeys, and Cage the Elephant) at Magic Gardens Mastering in Los Angeles.”

The Natterjacks – Wind No Rain: Indie folk duo from Chesterfield (Freddie Bingham and Mark Evans). They began playing together in 2010 after being friends at school for a number of years, and formed The Natterjacks, with influnces from Mumford & Sons, Ben Howard, The Avett Brothers, Bombay Bicycle Club and many more. Their second album, White Peak got them their debut national radio play from Bob Harris on BBC Radio 2.

Eldoradio – Pipe Dreams: “Swedish Eldoradio stepped into the limelight back in 2015 with their debut single Black & Blue… In April 2016, their debut album 21st century explosive sound was released. It took the band to England, on a support tour for Honningbarna and secured them gigs at some of Sweden’s biggest festivals. The songs Friend of Mine and Black and Blue have gotten added to rotation at SR P3 in Sweden (the biggest national radio station).”

Lauv – Easy Love: Twenty-three-year-old independent singer, songwriter and producer Lauv – the Latvian for “lion” and a nod to his mum’s Eastern European heritage – has released this new track. In addition, Lauv also announced that he will be going on his debut international tour supporting Ed Sheeran throughout Asia. The 14-date run will commence in Osaka, Japan on October 25th, and will wrap in Dubai on November 23rd.

Queen Zee and the Sasstones – Hunger Pains: “The latest single to be taken from their EP Eat My Sass, released earlier this year. Drawing heavily on a variety of musical influences, from the teenage rampage that was the 70’s garage and punk rock explosion to the maddest, wildest elements of exploratory 80’s pop – blurring the lines between everything, from sexuality and gender to global politics. Ultimately, they say, they’re more influenced by the city’s working class politics, LGBT+ community and diversity than by what they see as a stagnant music scene around them.”

MARC ft. Frederik Leopold – Can´t Live Without It:MARC has 20 Million streams to his name, powered to upper reaches of the Billboard Club Dance Chart and this summer he toured frequently including shows at Weekend Festival in Estonia, Finland with The Chainsmokers. On the new single Can’t Live Without It he teams up with the Danish artist Frederik Leopold (Warner Music)

K Anderson – Cluttered: London-based singer-songwriter K Anderson has revealed his new single, Cluttered. Sounding like Michael Stipe fronting Toni Basil’s ‘Mickey’, the song details the murky area between a casual fling and something more substantial. The lyrics, both definitive and ambiguous, explore that feeling of uncertainty when the oxytocin is coursing through your system. With its frantic drums and rumbling bass, Cluttered is a sonic departure from previous singles Bitter Wind and 14 Year Old Me, but still clearly demonstrates all of the hallmarks of Anderson’s writing – a wry world-weariness, sharp lyrics and a metaphorical arched eyebrow.
