I’ve probably watched more TV this year then I have since my kids were babies and kept me up most of the night. I would while away the wee hours rocking small children to sleep watching all kinds of crap on the telly. My husband and I made a pact not to be sat in the same room on separate devices doing who knew what when we could be watching TV programmes together or sharing TV moments as a family.
I’m interested to hear what your favourite TV moments have been this year. I know we are spread over many geographies and there will be differences in schedules and what gets aired, there must be some cross over though. I’m going to give you a flavour of what I enjoyed and will split out the documentaries/reality. If we have enough music documentary suggestions I could even split those out. Let’s see.
Drama/Comedy
- Killing Eve – Quirky assassin/obsessive cop pursuit drama. Brilliantly acted, hilarious and touching.
- Inside No 9 – the weird and ingenious writing of Shearsmith and Pemberton struck alternative comedy gold again.
- Sally4Ever – Julia Davis created cringeworthy comedy “romance” made me squirm and will for the end of each episode yet I couldn’t look away.
- The Deuce – second season of David Simon’s drama about the 70s/80s New York porn industry was as good as the first season and as brilliant at The Wire
- Doctor Who – Jodie Whittaker’s regeneration into the first female Doctor was a talking point in itself. The series itself kept my daughter and I utterly entertained. We loved it.
- The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – another series I watched with my daughter. We are both scaredy cats and really enjoyed having the crap frightened out of us watching this much darker and much less funny remake.
I’ve yet to watch Ozark, which my brother and my mate Pete have raved about for the 2nd half of the year. That’s next for me.
Documentaries/Reality
- Queer Eye – The most gorgeous make over programme I’ve ever watched. So joyous.
- The Vietnam War – epic 10 part Ken Burns documentary charting the history of violence in Vietnam. Takes some stamina to watch, but worth the effort.
- Reporting Trump’s First Year: The Fourth Estate – fascinating look at how the New York Times reported the first year in office.
- The Defiant Ones – One of the best music docs I’ve seen for a long time charting the rise and relationship of Dr Dre and Jimmy Lovine.
- The Art of Drumming – I absolutely loved this look at the life of the person at the back holding the sticks. Their creative importance has made me listen to music is a totally different way.
- Springsteen on Broadway – A film of his one man show which ran on Broadway for around a year. Loads of little anecdotes and personal stories.
- Reggae Fever: David Rodigan – Made me realise what a dude this guy is and how important he is to sharing reggae music.
- After the Screaming Stops – shown over the Christmas period here in the UK, this was the most hilarious, David Brent/Spinal Tap look at the Bros comeback. Properly funny.
- Dynasties – awesome nature doc featuring penguins, tigers, chimps.
- Wild Wild Country – documentary about an Indian cult ruffling some feathers in rural Oregon in 1980s
