As I write it’s windy, with a strong and gusty westerly wind. A perfect excuse to share one of my favourite songs (above) as well as your breezy selection of songs about wind, which range from the sublime to the ridiculous. If you have an earworm you’d like to share, please send an .mp3, .m4a or a link to [email protected], together with a few words about why you’ve chosen it. Next week’s theme will be shadows and shade. Many thanks to all contributors.

The Goodies – Blowing Off – shoegazer: Couldn’t resist.

Frank Ifield – Wayward Wind – glassarfempty: When I was still in short trousers, and didn’t know any better, I was very taken with this 1963 chart topper, a cover of a fifties country song by Anglo-Oz yodelling phenomenon Frank Ifield.

Ruthann Friedman – Windy – tincanman: Ruthann was kicking around San Fran in the 60s and wound up boarding in a spare bedroom. Windy hit for her roommates, and the girl in the back room became only the third woman to write a hit in the U.S. This is her demo. (If the name Ruthann Friedman (http://bit.ly/2ExjI1t) is new to you, you nonetheless probably know her by association.)

Albert Castiglia & Graham Wood Drout – Blow Wind Blow – AliM: I don’t know anything about this other than a little bit of bio, here. I suspect the track came via tincanman or Ravi originally.

Rory Gallagher – Race The Breeze – Ravi Raman: my favourite British bluesman, from his Blueprint album, remastered.

Honolulu Mountain Daffodils – Celestial Siren Song Of The Wind Surgeons – severin: Putting aside both their Stooges and Kraftwerk influences this is Adrian creating a Doctor Who soundscape and Pete channelling Jim Morrison via his inner Richard Burton. Possibly.

Sidsel Endresen – Western Wind – severin: Norwegian singer, musician and songwriter. I have seen her earlier music described as “chamber jazz”. I don’t know if that’s what this is. She tends to improvise lyrics in the studio and she doesn’t sound like anyone else that I know of. In a good way, he added hastily.

Rakesh Chaurasia – Vayu – Ravi Raman: a renowned flautist who plays the bansuri or long flute. Vayu is the mythical god of wind. From his album called Soundscapes – Wind.

Chopin Étude Op.25 No. 11 Winter Wind: Maggie B: Storm Freya was making herself felt and I thought of this

Blowing Off
Wayward wind
