There’s something I’ve wanted to introduce to the Spill audience for quite a long time but I’ve kept prevaricating. It’s radio, does anyone listen to radio anymore? I’ve spent my life listening to radio almost daily, delete that ‘almost’, I listen to radio every day and have done so for as long as I can remember, it started in about 1940. I’m not talking about pop music radio, I don’t think I’ve listened to that in about 50 plus years, I’m talking about what I consider to be ‘serious’ radio, non commercial interesting adult stuff, you know, arts, culture, politics, music, that sort of thing.

I have an ongoing regimen of programs that I listen to and from time to time I’ve had the thought that I should post one at the Spill, I’ve felt sure it would be appreciated there, and so finally I’m going to act on it. I spent an hour last night lying in bed listening to a program titled ‘Radiolab’, one of my favorites. As I listened I decided that I would post it to the Spill and so spent some time figuring out the logistics of how to present it, either by pre recording  it to mp3, or instead by posting the website of radiolab and letting you figure it out. This morning I googled it and was pleasantly surprised to see that someone had a similar idea, in fact a better idea, they’d posted it to youtube.

The topic of this program is Dr Oliver Sachs the British neurologist who died in 2015, the program is concerned with his last year or so and how he dealt with it, it’s an amazing story.

Some years ago we had a Spill post here about Dr Sachs, it might have been when his book about music was published;

Musicophillia; Tales of Music and the Brain – 2007.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Sacks   If you want a refresher on Dr Sachs go to Wiki, there’s a very thorough bio there and let me suggest the ‘in bed with earbuds’ method, it’s wonderful.

If this post is a success I’ll maybe make ‘radio’ posts an ongoing project, there’s so much interesting stuff on a variety of programs.
